AgelessBeautyFebruary 10, 2023

I bet that seeing celebrities undergo the strangest beauty treatments in an endless quest for perfect and ageless skin doesn’t surprise you anymore, does it? Read what the celebrities facialist Teresa Tarmey has to say about LED light therapy. And discover why the beauty treatment she uses on Kate Moss, Trinny Woodall and Sienna Miller rejuvenates the skin.

What is LED light therapy

First things first, let’s begin with the obvious; what is LED light therapy? According to Teresa Tarmey, Dermalux LED Phototherapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment that uses light energy to trigger the skin’s natural rejuvenation and repair, boosting instantly its vitality and glow.

How does it work?

At facialist clinics, you just have to lie under a light screen. But you can also wear a light mask and voilà! Light therapy uses the wavelength of different types of light to boost the repair of damaged cells hence rejuvenating skin. Each light has specific benefits for your skin. They can be used on their own or combined to target multiple indications.

Blue light

The blue light fights spots by destroying the bacteria that cause acne. It also balances sebum production and improves skin clarity. It is a great alternative to treat skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Red light

Red light is used to reduce fine lines and increase natural hydration as it boosts collagen and elastin synthesis. It also reduces redness and inflammation, improves circulation and accelerates skin repair, resulting in firmer and smoother skin. This light is a clinically effective treatment of hyperpigmentation and spots.

Near Infrared light

This is the most deeply absorbed wavelength and is ideal for the most sensitive and environmentally damaged skin. Infrared light has advanced skin rejuvenating benefits. It reduces redness, inflammation and pigmentation, and is effective against age spots.

When to use light therapy

The famous celebrity facialist uses Led light therapy on her A-list clients in every single facial. She always starts by cleaning the skin of her clients with a Lactic brightening peel. And she finishes by applying sunscreen after the light treatment. In case you’re wondering, the lights aren’t UV so no need to worry about damage or getting an unwanted tan. Additionally, Tarmey says the therapy is good for all skin types.

Can you try this at home?

Definitely, but be careful not to frighten your family with the creepy Hannibal Lecter-like mask! Several brands offer light masks and tools that you can easily use at home to achieve almost professional results. Of course, these home appliances are not as strong as the ones used by facialists, but when using them regularly, you will see your skin improve and glow.

How to use Led light therapy at home?

At-home face LED devices are safe and efficient. Light masks are the easiest to use. Just wear the mask over your face, relax for about 10 minutes every day, and you’re done. Smaller devices and wands are normally used for treating specific areas, for example, acne-prone skin. You will have to hold the light device over your skin for 20 to 30 minutes, not very comfortable though. Remember always to clean your skin and remove any makeup as Teresa Tarmey does. If you want, you can apply activated masks to enhance the effects of your device. Once the treatment is over, maintain its effects with the use of a serum.

Our advice

When using a light therapy mask, make sure you keep your eyes closed. Although the lights aren’t dangerous, they are very bright and may cause irritation. When using face masks, place cotton pads on your eyes.

Interesting fact

As it usually happens, the therapy used by the celebrity’s facialist was discovered by accident. NASA used LED to promote plant growth in space during the ’80s. They later realized that it also reduced inflammation and boosted healing in open wounds.
