If you live on planet earth you’ve probably realized by now that the nerd look is on-trend and it is surprisingly cool to look un-cool.
Puffer jackets, dad jeans, tracksuits and especially those huge chunky and colourful sneakers one would wear to go to the gym in the 90’s. The Ugly Sneakers are back and they here for the long haul. And for the cherry on the cake: you should wear them with white socks!
Designer Phoebe Philo presented in her Spring 2013 collection for Céline sneakers and sensible sandals. Suddenly what we used to consider “ugly shoes” began to pop-up on catwalks and in the streets of London, N.Y., L.A, Paris and Milan. Things went as far as having Balenciaga’s chunky platform Crocs sold out even before being officially released at $850!
You could call Ugly Sneakers, Nerd Sneakers or Dad Sneakers any kind of oversized trainers, with really-really thick soles, they can be all shiny white or colourful but they must be in-your-face, they must stand out in contrast and sort of unbalance your look.
All the major designers have adopted the trend and aesthetics of the Dad sneakers. Balenciaga had his models wearing the already sold out Triple S sneakers on the catwalk, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Stella McCartney, Rick Owens and any other influential brand have already their own version of the oversized sneakers.
The ugly sneakers are everywhere and they are so ugly that we find them beautiful! Models and fashionistas were seen in huge sneakers during the latest fashion weeks. Sisters Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, Jaden Smith, Chiara Ferragni and Elsa Hosk are among the many who love wearing the comfortable, bulky and intentionally ugly shoes.
Nerd sneakers can be worn with almost anything but as with everything in life, there’s a right way to do it.
You can wear your retro dad sneakers with, of course, dad jeans, with elegant pantsuits and tailored trousers, with romantic floral dresses, with mini-skirts or as Bella Hadid, with an oversized jacket, tights and white nerd socks. You could wear them with a nice stripped dress and coat, holding a basket-like bag, to contrast femininity with the chunky dad sneakers as seen in the latest Louis Vuitton campaign.
If you go for colourful sneakers, wear them with scrunched white socks or solid colour socks, leave your cool patterned socks for white or black sneakers.
