You must already be packed to go to some beautiful beach, or maybe you plan to spend some time on the mountains, near a beautiful lake to relax while you sunbathe. No matter, whether you visit there’s one essential item you mustn’t forget to pack: your sunscreen!
We all know by now that the ultraviolet rays of the sun damage our skin, so if you want to keep your skin glowing, healthy and younger-looking, even on cloudy days you shouldn’t forget your SPF, let alone during summer time!
As the experts at the Skin Cancer Foundation explain, there are two types of harmful sun rays; UVB rays, that cause sunburn and can cause cancer, and UVA rays, that cause skin ageing and wrinkles.
The SPF number ( sun protection factor ) refers to the amount of protection against UVB rays your sunscreen has, that means, how long can you stay under the sun without getting burned compared to without any sunscreen. Look for a sunscreen that is SPF 30 to 50. And how about the UVA? It is essential to choose sunscreens that are “Broad spectrum”, which means, they protect your skin against both UVB and UVA rays. Better use a water-resistant lotion, apply it 30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply it after swimming or sweating and every two hours.
Be careful. Because sunscreen gives you the impression you have enough protection, you may stay too long in the sun and damage your skin. So even when wearing sunscreen, don’t forget to avoid the hotter hours of the day, reapply it frequently and wear a hat and sunglasses, otherwise you may end up looking like a tomato and with such painful sunburn that you won’t even be able to get dressed after the shower, missing out on all the after-beach fun!
