It was Friday night at Prada’s HQ in New York, the amazing building designed by the star architects Herzog & de Meron, that Miuccia Prada presented her Cruise 2019 collection.
Actually, a very well chosen date since NY was already packed with Hollywood stars, movie directors and VIPs who were there for the Met Gala too. Chloe Sevigny, Claire Danes, Lily Collins, Baz Luhrmann, Uma Thurman, Marc Jacobs were a few of the many celebrities who attended the show.
Prada’s show was extremely 90’s, following the global trend we’ve been seeing lately. The soundtrack reminded me of my teenage years, Mad World (not the original from Tears for Fears but still, a very good newer version), REM and so on. And the setting was quite fantastic, a huge concrete structure with visible pillars where images of virtual cityscapes and of the models who were on the runway, were projected on huge colored semi-transparent panels, on the big windows there were also red panels creating an artificial and exaggerated sunset, the whole giving an eery sense of virtual reality.
Miuccia Prada described the show and collection as being “like a fantasy and the reality (…) it is my fantasy on what today for me is real.”
The outfits were very on-trend, in a 90’s cool-nerdy style, with clean shapes, long skirts, structured brocade or leather jackets and trench coats , ruffles oddly placed on minis and polo shirts, which were worn over turtlenecks and with tights and huge trapper hats, everything with Prada’s typical mix&match of “ugly prints”, all very 90’s. Yellow, oranges and purples were all there too.
