Pearls, the perfect gems from the depths of the sea, are never really out of fashion.
Although some might think of them as too conservative or classic, you can actually wear pearls with a modern twist, as we saw it during the SS 2018 Fashion Shows. Just remember Gucci Resort 2018 when Alessandro Michele had his models on the catwalk with pearls woven into their tresses or with a cluster of pearls forming a kind of helmet that covered not only the head but also part of the model’s face.
Pearls have been worn in jewellery since Ancient Greece and they have always been one of the most treasured gems, not only for its rarity but also because it symbolized in many ancient cultures, the Moon, the purity, generosity and femininity, Ancient Chinese believed that pearls would protect its wearer from dragons and fire. But leaving aside all these symbolisms, pearls are extremely flattering, they lighten up any look and go well with all styles.
You can wear them now with romantic flower prints or mix them with your old jeans and a crisp white shirt for an elegant but casual look. Pearl maxi earrings that are so now, can glam up any outfit, wear big brooches with pearls or pearl barrettes on your hair (the more, the better) like seen in Simone Rocha’s Spring 2018, and in the streets of the most fashionable cities around the world.
We are used to Karl Lagerfeld using pearls and more pearls in all Chanel's collections, not only in necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings but also to embellish bags, shoes, headbands and lapels. But lately, they have really become a must, everyone will be wearing them this season and the next one too.
In Milan Fashion Week, Dolce & Gabbana presented maxi-tiaras with pearls, Gucci used multi-string pearl necklaces and several pearl rings worn together to complete the outfits while Oscar de la Renta prefered one string-chokers.
We also saw pearls at Céline, Alexandre McQueen, Valentino, Mulberry, Y/Project with Tahitian pearls and Sonia Rykiel, who chose the Baroque pearl with its organic irregular shape instead of the perfectly round shaped pearls.
So before buying any new accessory, be it sneakers, bags or jewellery, make sure it has plenty of pearls!
