“LA La Land” actor Ryan Gosling can’t hide his admiration for his fellow actress, Saoirse Ronan, the “Lady Bird” star. He directed her in his movie “Lost River” some years ago and said in an interview that “she’s a genius. She’s a master. She made me a better actor (…) I felt like I was working with a master" he added, “someone superior to my skills as an actor in every way. She’s Meryl reborn.”
Dominic Cooke, who directed the Irish-American actress in the movie “On Chesil Beach”, also compared the 23-year-old Saoirse to Oscar-awarded Meryl Streep, and said that her career would go on and on.
Irish actress and comedian Deidre O’Kane tweeted that Saoirse “is our Meryl Streep…” after Saoirse won this year, the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actress for her performance in the bittersweet “Lady Bird” where she portrays Christine, a teenager from Sacramento.
Besides all these comparisons about their amazing acting talent that make both stand out among other actresses, internet users have been talking about their physical similarity too, after a twitter with a photo of a young Meryl next to one of Saoirse went viral.
Saoirse thinks that being called the next Meryl Streep is lovely and amazing. She says that “Meryl is wonderful. She has made a huge difference for females in the industry”.
The actress was born in 1994, in New York, where her parents had moved a few years before, but the family moved back to Ireland when Saoirse was three years old. She went to a small school with only a few students in her hometown, the rural Country Carlow, near Dublin. In fact, the number of students was so small that they had to put in one classroom the first four years and in the other, the next four years.
Although Saoirse is only 23, she’s already had quite a long career since she started acting at the age of 9 in “The Clinic”, an Irish TV series, alongside her father who’s also an actor. She played after Michelle Pfeiffer’s daughter in “I Could Never Be Your Woman”. By the time she was 13, she had already been nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress for her impressive performance in the film “Atonement”. She was again nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Actress for the film “Brooklyn” and then, for "Lady Bird". She is the second youngest actress to get three Oscars nominations, coming second only to Jennifer Lawrence.
Over the years, she’s chosen strong, complex and interesting characters with often a dark side. She’s played a young girl whose imagination ruins the life of a man, a teen assassin, a vampire, a rape victim, a pastry baker who helps a man escape prison, an Irish immigrant among others.
If I had to compare her to Meryl Streep, I’d say that the most significant similarity between them is that both tend to choose unusual types of fascinating characters to portray in each film they make. And these rich characters are what make them so unique to us, film lovers.
