Fur has always been a woman’s symbol to show her social status. Back in the 20s, for example, it was impossible to scrimp on a fur coat. Buying a fake piece was embarrassing. Because if you break out in that fur direction, you go all the way. Why is or was this luxurious product so highly coveted? The argument is, that rare, precious materials elevate the self-worth and dressing in a very exclusive garment, makes one feel more special and also confident.
Today, fur is not necessarily connected to a certain status anymore. Simultaneously with the growing market for luxury goods, fake fur became a trend. While at its beginnings, it tried to imitate the original – literally faking it – nowadays it’s not supposed that fake fur looks like real fur, it is a fashion piece that speaks for itself.
The first imitations of pelt emerged in the 1910s and they were made of pile fabric. Its relatively good quality and the immense prices of real furs lead to a boon for pile manufacturers. Nevertheless, it was not very ‘chic’ to go for the fake. Improving technologies extended the possibilities for producing fabric fur. By the 50s, mink, beaver, chinchilla, seal, raccoon, ermine, pony, and giraffe was faked.
Another vote against real fur came from animal rights organizations, that started speaking up from the late 60s on. In 1974, actress Mary Tyler Moore advocated in an anti-fur campaign for The Fund For Animals, together with famous colleagues as Doris Day. The campaign caused controversies as the women were wearing fake fur coats that looked rather real, but it caused also ripples for the good cause. With many starlets switching from real to fake, the new trend boomed.
Today, it’s not a question anymore if going real or fake. Even Fendi, who is one of the top and most successful fur producers, is launching faux fur. Real pelt is outdated, and apart from the ethical (and the financial ) point, the diversity of models, styles, and types of fake fur coats is just another reason to choose them.
