Think of Valentino. What comes to your mind? Dresses, gowns, silk, embroidery… and everything else Haute Couture, right? For their Resort 2018 collection, the brand reinvented itself and went into a completely different direction than what they would normally do. It addresses an urban casualty, sporty and unfettered. Exactly that was also the head designer’s intention. To add a daywear side to Valentino’s repertoire and meet the customer’s needs for their increasing casual lifestyles, as Pierpaolo Piccioli points out. The limited resort 2018 collection is called VLTN and features athletic fashion and sports gears (like a basketball or a yoga mat).
While borrowing materials, cuts, and equipment from the sports sections, Valentino still stays true to its high claims for fashion, namely that it is not only chic and looks nice, but also that the quality is high and the pieces are luxurious and worth their price. Bringing out a sports (inspired) collection doesn’t mean that it’s sportswear.
The new collection is one of many steps into a different field. The Italian Fashion House, that used to present their collections at Paris Fashion Week, went to New York this time, to be closer to that new, urban and street style atmosphere that they are striving after. The big apple and its ‘playgrounds’ was also the location for the shooting of the resort campaign, shot by Terry Richardson. Also, the logo has changed. VLTN, is going to be the new Valentino, to be written of clothes, shops and on Instagram of course, as a hashtag.
