Bye-bye athleisure, hello Nike Couture!
Off-White SS19 Collection - @WGSN
After the French Open officials told Serena Williams that the catsuit she was wearing at the tournament wouldn’t be allowed anymore, the 23-time Grand Slam champion rocked a tutu-suit at the U.S.Open! Her fabulous ballerina-esque tennis dress was designed by Louis Vuitton and Off-White designer Virgil Abloh for Nike.
Working with Serena to create that outfit was the inspiration for the Off-White S/S’19 collection Abloh has just presented in Paris, called “Track and Field”.
The American DJ, music producer and designer explained that “track and field is where you compete. There’s a foundation to it; it’s not just clothes for clothes’ sake”, and added “It was really refreshing for me not to be in fashion mode. It was performance.”
And to prove that his creations are not just another athleisure collection, real-life gold-medal female athletes shared the catwalk with models like Bella Hadid, Karlie Kloss and Kendall Jenner. The catwalk was transformed into a running track, and there was an electronic board were the names and nationalities of each one appeared, as at the Olympic games.
The collection is fab, leggings and cycling shorts mixed with dresses, tailored pants with a tutu-ish tulle train, tailored jackets with leggings, athletic-looking shoes with heels. It is athletic apparel merged with glam femininity, and somehow, this odd combination looks like a match made in heaven.
Besides the clothes, Off-White also developed with Nike the sneakers Waffle Racer that have a hand-sewn look and innovative functions in the soles.
