If you like whimsical and luxurious jewellery, that's the designer for you!
Looking at the work of the Turkish designer Begün Kiroglu is like opening an incredible cabinet of wonders, entering a world of dreams and magical creatures. Her jewellery pieces are whimsical, at the same time luxurious and playful. Beetles, scorpions, flies, frogs and even the dome of a Mosque in Istanbul become exotic earrings, cufflinks and bracelets, covered in semi-precious stones mixed with coral, baroque pearls or coconut beads.
Coming from a family of Ottoman antique collectors, Begün Kiroglu grew up in Istanbul among beautiful art and rare objects. She studied business and then luxury brand management at Bocconi University in Milan, and fascinated by the Oriental culture; went on to pursue a Masters degree in Chinese Culture in Shanghai, where she still lives.
Begün launched in 2011 her jewellery brand Begün Kahn, starting with cufflinks collections inspired by heritage style and antiques' designs and colours.
The designer has “always thought cufflinks have something mysterious about them. They are half-hidden under the jacket, half-shown. This kind of veiled elegance is very alluring and sophisticated.”
She says her career as a jewellery designer began in Istanbul because she couldn’t find a nice pair of cufflinks she wanted to give to her brother as a wedding gift. One of her uncles who is an art historian told her of a little silverware shop. She had never designed something before and they had never made cufflinks, but somehow the cooperation worked out well. In fact, it turned out so well that, although she is based in Shanghai, she still has all her jewellery made at this little workshop hidden in a small street next to the Grand Bazaar.
She feels the combination of these two towns is very exciting as they are both cosmopolitan cities with Eastern tradition.
If you want beautiful and sparkling insects or turtles climbing up your ears to add some instant exotic glamour to your look, you can find the luxurious Begün Kahn fashion jewellery on her e-shop or in stores around the world such as Bergdorf Goodman in New York, Selfridges in London, Mad Lords in Paris or Reyer in Salzburg, among many others.
