Vintage silk print is the coolest!
Rianna + Nina, one is German, the other one, Greek, they both met at a Vintage furniture fair in Berlin where they noticed each other because of the colourful outfits they were wearing from head to toe. They started talking, and that was the beginning of a fruitful business partnership: the new fashion label Rianna + Nina.
Rianna Nektaria Kounou and Nina Kuhn have a special love and eye for vintage and colours. The duo travels the world in search of vintage scarfs and fabrics with old prints, some of them from brands as Hermès, Pucci or Valentino, that they use to make their bold tunics, dresses, kimonos, jackets, and trousers that one can mix and match into beautiful and unique looks.
Rianna Kounou was born in Athens where she grew up surrounded by amazing fabrics and costumes her mother rented for movies and photo shoots. Rianna studied costume design, but she followed her passion and had a vintage store in Athens for twenty years. After moving to Berlin in 2009, she opened the vintage store she still operates nowadays.
Nina studied media management and got a Masters in Fashion and Design Management. She started as an intern at a PR company, then at Bill Blass and BMW before working for Galeries Lafayette as head of marketing in Berlin.
The two opened together in 2014, a small shop in Berlin to sell the one-of-a-kind kimonos and dresses they made, and nowadays, you can find their eye-catching pieces at Bergdorf Goodman, MatchesFashion, Mode Operandi and around 25 other stores from Hong Kong to Monaco.
One of the strong points of the brand’s one-of-a-kind collection, besides the beautiful vintage fabrics, is the high quality in all details. The pieces are hand-made in Germany, the individual buttons come from a collector they found in a small town in Italy, and the duo has even travelled to Japan in search of the perfect Obi!
They have also launched their own print collection; high-quality cotton, silk and wools are printed in Como, Italy, to make their signature colourful outfits with bold scarf prints that are especially trendy right now. But Nina and Rianna don not follow trends. They are as a matter of fact, into slow fashion and make timeless garments that can withstand the passing of time.
By the way, it isn’t only the silk-scarf prints that are fashionable at this moment. The very scarves, more specifically, vintage ones, are very on-trend; several designers are using them to make beautiful collections such as the French designer Marine Serre and La Double J, a label of clothes and home-decor made in colourful vintage prints from the historical archive of a textile company in Como.
Rianna and Nina have many plans for the future of their brand; they are launching their line for home decor again, they want to start a collection of sunglasses and jewellery, and expand their range of own print collection, so we can expect to keep enjoying their colourful world for a long time!
