The 96-year-old American style icon and interior designer Iris Apfel has a Barbie to call her own!
Mattel has just created a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in the likeness of Iris Apfel. Iris Barbie has a new style, short white hair and scarlet lips, and she wears the same green Gucci suit that Apfel was photographed in for the cover of her book “Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon”, the big round black glasses and of course, plenty of bold necklaces and bracelets!
The toy manufacturing company said that they will launch this Autumn a new Barbie styled by Iris, she will wear the same huge glasses that have already become Iris’ trademark, a short bob and several layers of bold necklaces from Iris jewellery collection “Avis Rara”.
Barbie shows us on her Instagram account ( Yes, Barbie has her own Instagram with 1.9m followers!!) her new look inspired by the one and only Iris Apfel.
Who is Iris Apfel?
Iris Apfel was born in New York, from a Russian mother who owned a fashion boutique.
After studying Art History in University, she went on to work for the “fashion Bible” Woman’s Wear Daily. She also worked with interior design and was assistant to illustrator Robert Goodman.
After getting married, she launched with her husband a textile company and ran it for 44 years. During these years, Iris worked on several design restorations including projects in the White House for several American Presidents. It was also during these years that the couple travelled a lot and she started collecting artisanal clothes from all over the world, which she wore at parties, drawing the attention of her high-society clients.
Her personal style became more and more well-known and in 2014, Albert Maysles made a documentary about her: “Iris”. She also stared in 2016 a commercial for a French car and was the face of an Australian brand. In that same year, she launched her jewellery line.
It is impossible not to notice Iris. Always dressed in bright colours and wearing proudly her white hair and oversized black glasses, several chunky beaded necklaces, rings and bracelets, everything about the small old lady screams “I’m here, I'm huge, I'm enjoying life and having fun!”
About style, Iris said in an interview: "Fashion you can buy, but style, you possess. The key to style is learning who you are, which takes years. There's no how-to roadmap to style. It's about self-expression, and above all, attitude."
And attitude is definitely something that Iris Apfel doesn't lack!
Who else has a Barbie to call their own?
Other stylish celebrities have already had one-of-a-kind Barbies made in their likeness: Gigi Hadid, Zendaya, Ashley Graham and ballerina Misty Copeland.
Any other famous women Barbies?
To celebrate Women’s Day, Mattel launched a collection of “Inspiring Women”, with dolls in the likeness of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, mathematician Katherine Johnson, aviator Amelia Earhart and Olympic champions Gabby Douglas and Chloe Kim.
Although it was a big success and Barbie Frida Kahlo is currently sold out, many people criticized the company for not having made her with her full unibrow and the actress Salma Hayek, who played her in the film “Frida” showed her disapproval by writing on her Instagram:
“Frida Kahlo never tried to be or look like anyone else. She celebrated her uniqueness. How could they turn her into a Barbie.”
