Outfit ideasDecember 04, 2020

Winter is all about feeling warm and cosy, and nothing is cosier than the quilted coat trend. In fact, for those who think puffer coats are too bulky, the sleek quilted outwear is just the perfect option to keep you warm this season.

Who hasn’t dreamt of spending winter days wrapped in a duvet cover? Well, now you can. With this season’s quilted coats, you will feel you’re still in your warm bed while going to work or running errands looking stylish.

The quilted coat is a sleeker and more elevated version the oversized puffer coats that are one of the coat trends we spotted in A/W 2020 runway shows. Padded like their bulky cousins, the quilted coats are less voluminous and have an old-school feel. We saw them at luxury fashion houses like Chloé, Bottega Veneta, Salvatore Ferragamo. And the quilted coat trend is here for the long run; Baum und Pferdgarten also presented them for Spring/Summer 21.

The elegant quilted coat first appeared in the U.K. centuries ago but became a thing in the mid-sixties. The warm quilted jackets and coats are made with several layers of fabric sewn together into a thick material that ends up looking like a duvet, hence the name duvet coat or quilted coat. Synonym to chic England countryside living, are now taking the streets of fashionable cities and our Instagram feeds. In fact, they have become a must in the wardrobe of fashion-enthusiasts and influencers.

This winter’s quilted coat trend is easy-to-wear and elevates any outfit. For example, throw it over a velour tracksuit, and you’re street-ready. You can wear your quilted coat like Pernille Teisbaek, with wide-leg trousers and chunky boots for a contemporary and tomboy-is look. Or pair it with high-heeled pumps like Lisa Aiken, for a more feminine look. For extra fashion points, wear two trends together; a quilted coat and pants with wide legs tucked in the boots as the Spanish Blanca Miró does.

Quilted coats come in various colours and styles. Wear the minimalist coat open if you want a fluid and sleek look, or tie it with a belt for a feminine silhouette. Either way, the quilted coat looks elevated and chic.
