So the week is already almost gone and we must start getting ready for a very productive weekend: series binge-watching!

Netflix has an unbelievably ginormous selection of films and TV series. Although this is great, such a big choice can sometimes cause serious problems when it comes to choosing the right series and you may end up very upset by the end of Sunday if you wasted hours just looking for the right one to watch but, like Bono, still haven’t found what you’re looking for.

To spare you this shattering frustration, we have selected a few Netflix series that you won’t regret watching!

Call the Midwife

Based on the best-selling memoirs of British nurse Jennifer Worth, set in the late 50’s and 60’s, “Call the Midwife” chronicles the lives of a young nurse and other midwives working in a poor neighbourhood in East-London. The nurse had thought she would work at a small hospital and was surprised when she found out that it was actually a nursing convent and the other midwives were nuns. She gradually begins to become friends with this unconventional and sometimes eccentric but very lovable group of nuns and the families they treat.

This British period drama’s cast includes Vanessa Redgrave as the mature voice of the main character, Jenny Lee, portrayed by Jessica Raine. BBC said that the first 6 episodes reached the highest audience for a new drama series on BBC. In 2012 it won the Best New Drama award and Miranda Hart, who plays one of the midwives was awarded Best Actress at the TV Choice Awards. Sadly, Jennifer Worth, the author and real-life nurse, passed away just before the first episode was shown and couldn’t see what a huge success it would become.

The Mechanism

If you like politics and want to understand what is happening in Brazil right now, or if you like a good thriller about corruption, crime and police investigation, “The Mechanism” is perfect for you.

Directed by José Padilha, who also directed the excellent “Elite Squad” and “Narcos”, The Mechanism shows the “Operação Lava-jato” or Operation Car-Wash, an on-going real-life police operation that has been investigating for the past 9 years corruption schemes happening in Brazil between the government and big construction firms, involving astronomical amounts of money and the 2 last presidents of Brazil. Since its beginning, several politicians and businessmen have already been imprisoned, many others are facing charges, several people involved in the scheme have “accidentally” died, president Dilma Rousseff was impeached and ex-president Lula, who has been under criminal investigation for years, is on the verge of going to prison. No best-seller crime thriller is a match for such a scandalous plot! Not to be missed.

Altered Carbon

Described as a dystopian science fiction cyberpunk TV show, Altered Carbon is based on a novel by British Richard K.Morgan. It takes place in the future, in the year 2384, a time when people’s memories can be stored in a device that is then implanted in “vessels”, human or synthetic bodies called sleeves.

Takeshi, the only surviving soldier of an attack against the new world order 250 years before, wakes up in a new sleeve. He is made to chose between spending his life in prison or helping to solve the murder of one of the richest persons in the settled worlds.

River

River is an unusual detective drama about the brilliant John River, a police detective played by the excellent Stellan Skarsgard, who works in East-London solving murder cases. He is a gentle detective with mental issues, which he struggles to control, being haunted by the crime victims.

This six-part British series is a huge success and highly recommended by viewers who are amazed by the plot.
