At the end of every year, Pantone, known for its colour recognition system, announces the colour of the following year. And the colour of 2021 will not be one but two, the yellow Illuminating and Ultimate Grey. But based on what does Pantone pick these tones? And how did they decide grey and yellow would be the colours of 2021?
Why Ultimate Grey and Illuminating yellow for 2021?
Many complained about the selection of 2021. But the colours Pantone chose couldn’t be more appropriate, after a pandemic year filled with insecurities. Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, explains, “The union of an enduring Ultimate Grey with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic. This is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

Prophetic choice or pure marketing?
Is the choice of grey and yellow as the colours 2021 a prediction of how the year will turn out? Or is it maybe just marketing? The colour experts at Pantone began selecting the colour of the year in 2000 as a publicity stunt. It was so successful that nowadays, the annual announcement influences the world of interior and graphic design, not to mention fashion. For example, who doesn’t remember Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, in The Devil wears Prada, basically giving a lesson of fashion around cerulean blue, the colour of the year 2000?
That is a piece to be worn all year round; pair it with white pants in spring and grey ones in fall.
