The latest viral hit on the web is the new single of the Korean rapper j-hope, “Chicken Noodle Soup”. Over the weekend, the catchy song and fun choreography have become the number one Twitter # in Austria, Germany and most of Europe, receiving millions of likes. The #CNS Challenge on TikTok already has people from all over the world showing off their Chicken Noodle Soup dance moves!
J-Hope and Becky G are bringing back a 2006 hip-hop classic by AG aka The Voice of Harlem and Young B, which they said was “one of our favourite childhood songs.” The music video combines rapping in Korean, Spanish and English, not to mention the more than 50 dancers from different nationalities.
There’s a lot of discussions about K-Pop appropriating black culture through fashion, especially now with j-hope appearing in parts of the video with a hair-do that resembles dreadlocks. The young Korean’s aesthetic throughout the MV is clearly inspired by the hip-hop scene, which he listened to while growing up in South-Korea. The controversy around whether it is cultural appropriation or cultural appreciation seems to be a bit exaggerated. The 25-year-old singer, music producer and dancer is merely paying tribute to his youth idols. We loved this new rendition of CNS and the fantastic cool outfits of j-hope.
