Sacai is a Japanese luxury fashion brand you should pay attention to. Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour and Suzy Menkes, just to mention a few, are fans of the label that is a fashion inspiration for many Japanese designers.
Launched in 1999 by Chitose Abe, né Sakai, the label is known for making luxury clothes that manage to be at the same time formal and casual. Sacai collections of men’s and womenswear have a creative aesthetic of hybrid garments that combine feminine ruffles and pleats with masculine tailoring, classics with innovative and experimental fabrics, and different patterns and textures juxtaposed. The result of the way the designer subverts the normal construction of a garment is always whimsical and unique as for example, the shirts combined with T-shirts or the jackets with shirts, that seem different depending on the angle from where you’re looking.
The beautiful Kaia Gerber was shot by British photographer Craig McDean for Sacai A/W2018 campaign, wearing the designer’s surprising creations. By the way, Chitose Abe is not new to fashion, daughter of a seamstress, she grew up in Japan making doll’s clothes. She recalls that her mother refused to go out with her because of her avant-garde way of dressing, which has always been a way of expressing herself.
After moving to Tokyo, Abe began working in fashion as a pattern cutter at Comme des Garçons and then for Junya Watanabe for eight years before launching her almost-eponymous label – she replaced the K in her maiden name with a C in her fashion label to separate her personal and professional lives. She is the darling of fashion magazines that feature her unusual creations on their glossy pages and is so influential that Vogue cited her as being responsible for breaking the barriers between casual and formal.
In 2008, Sacai took part in the Paris Fashion Week for the first time. This year, the Japanese label presented once again, a fabulous show, which Abe described as being a “melting pot of Sacai tastes“. Her hybrid creations got an extra-glamorous touch thanks to the leopard spots and fake-fur. For her Pre-Fall 2019 collection, the designer collaborated with Nike to create four hybrid sneakers, including one with a fur-tongue, that she’s just presented on the Paris Fashion Week runway and that will be out in the stores later this year.
