Wearing the coat or the jacket thrown over the shoulders, with the arms outside the sleeves but hidden under the fabric has become the new, trendy way of layering. The overcoat has been turned into a cape. It is the go-to-style for a dressed-up, fancy daytime look, as this “unintended nonchalance” is truly chic when combined with denim and heels. The actual, real cape has been put into reserve for official and more formal occasions. Never out of style, but discounted anyway, it waited for its moment to return.
The latest when Saint Laurent showed his heart-shaped fur piece on the runway for his fall 2016 collection, it was clear, that the cape would soon have its big comeback. Guess what, this big moment is here now!
Suddenly, it’s all about capes. Little shoulder capes, oversized cape coats, short capes jackets, hoodie capes and embellished Haute Couture capes.
Especially precious pieces with embroidery, stitching, and other decorative elements are in the center of attention currently and thereby worn day in, day out. Even real jackets (=capes with sleeves ;) dress up to pretend to be capes and come in short length and with wide, loose sleeves.
