It’s easy to make New Year’s resolutions, while it is not as easy to stick to them. Why? Well, let’s take a look at that, shall we? Every year, we get out our pens and papers and write down some goals for the coming year: hitting the gym every day, spending less money on clothes, eating better, etc. The problem is that, while setting these goals, we shoot for the moon and never take a single goal for what really is: a finishing line, and not a single step.

The trick to stick to New Year’s resolution is simple: take it little by little. Here is how to do it.

Start with the gym once or twice a week

A popular resolution is getting fit and losing weight. Great, but you can’t just hop off the couch and become an athlete overnight. If what you’ve lacked so far is motivation, you gotta build it. Start with one or two dates with the gym every week to get things going. Your body will take it from there.

Eating better? Yes, but with cheat days

Same goes for your eating habits. If you wanna start eating healthier, embrace veggies, but forget a sudden regimen of only soup and stale bread. Learn to love your healthy food. And don’t forget your sweet, sweet cheat days.

That new job takes time

That might be a no-brainer, but quitting your job cold-turkey is most probably not the smartest way to get closer to your dream job. Instead, do a little side-research, update your CV, save some money. And then take the leap.

Don’t be too harsh on yourself

All in all, the best trick to stick to your New Year’s resolutions is to be gentle to yourself. Keep your eyes on the prize, but make every step towards your goals your main focus. This will prevent you from giving up way too early and will keep you motivated.
