An artist and activist, Ai Weiwei just needed a few more bouts of creativity in order to become an official jack of all trades. And he made it happen: together with the Elisabetta Cipriani gallery (London), Ai Wei Wei created his first jewelry collection.
Even more than jewelry, these pieces of art could be called wearable sculptures. The appear like steel rebar reinforcement rods used in constructions, and they are cast in 24 carat gold. Ai Weiwei made these pieces directly out of rubble created by the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008.
If you want to see more of Ai Weiwei, it’s your lucky day. From July 14 to November 20, Vienna’s 21er Haus will be hosting Ai Weiwei’s exhibition translocation – transformation. It will include a temple from the Ming Dynasty re-constructed within the Haus, and the whole exhibition will stretch out in the Belvedere gardens, where Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads will be.
