All the ardent Gucci devotees out there might remember that day in December when Gucci’s snapchat story lighted up the foggy season termed winter. It did so by revealing a short behind-the-scenes video of Gucci photo shoot that included not only cult photographer Ari Marcopoulos but also the brand’s then under wraps – pre fall ’16 collection. Only that, back then, we had absolutely no idea of what was just happening, what the photoshoot was for or how long we would have to wait to be illuminated.
And it was a long waiting time. Five months it took until the public was allowed to be let known the riddle’s answer: Gucci presented a special to a 1000 copies limited book called “Epiphany” on the (already bygone) 5th of May. Why we are still telling you about it, then? Because this launch happened in Gucci’s New York Dover Street Market store and it’s only now that, as the clock strikes June (or so), the book is also available in Europe, at the men’s wear trade show Pitti Uomo in Florence. And on the 16th of this month, the Gucci museum in Florence will be the venue for a reception in honor of the book and even Marcopoulos will be there, signing books – so if neither Ibiza nor Capri fully complies to your wishes, why not choose Florence and get a copy?
Thing is, you can surely have high expectations on this coffee table book in specific: the photographer, Marcopoulos, has made himself a name as one of our time’s most crucial documentarians of American culture ever since he moved to New York in the 1980s. And also, the few but significant insights we have promises just the right balance of aesthetics, edginess and limitation in edition that makes a coffee table book a good one. And while the latter reason certainly is one for the lucky 1000 who get to buy one for the surprisingly reasonable price of 55 euros, we still have to think about all the rest of you, right? We have therefore combed through the world of coffee table books and – tadaa – are proud to present to you 2 alternatives, which are almost as good.
In the gallery you’ll find some insights into Gucci’s Epiphany book and, also, bespoke alternatives!
