Just a while ago, we were praising the revamping Gucci went through since the arrival of Alessandro Michele. Today, we haven’t changed our minds, but we surely see the point made by the Advertising Standards Authority of Britain. Last Wednesday, the ad you see above was banned due to the model in it appearing ‘unhealthily thin’. The model also appears in a promotional video made by Gucci, presenting the SS16 collection.
We get the point, we really do. Putting extremely thin models up on posters is something that can easily have consequences. After all, we are all well aware of the debate that keeps going on concerning the issues some propagated stereotypes can bring up, especially when it comes to young women. Just very few of us can actually avoid feeling a little stung when looking up at some ad featuring models in a bikini, and the photoshopping involved goes often forgotten.
However, there is another point to be made. As a matter of fact, there are people out there who are actually very, very thin. As everyone finds him/herself with a different body type, we can all relate. Who doesn’t have an extra thin friend somewhere, one of those who, no matter how many ice creams and pizzas they wolf down, they’ll just never gain half a pound?
We don’t really know if the Gucci model has gone through dietary hell to reach her figure, or she was just born this way. But can we tell from a picture? And, in particular, can we be the judges when asking ourselves: when is a model too thin?
