As a petite girl myself, I will say this: fashion life is hard. Skinny jeans that don’t need rolling up at the bottom are far away dreams as much as the idea of a colony on Mars. Boyfriend jeans, on the other hand, are a no-go if you don’t want to look like a flag. Friends may or may not pat you on the head even when you are wearing heels.
Imagine my face when I started to realize that the latest trends involve loads of oversize things. Oversize pants, oversize cardigans, oversize dresses. I frowned as I imagined myself trying to look fashionable from within one of those baggy dresses — a human-sized bag of chips on its way to the office. But then, it took a couple of street style photos to reach enlightenment.
In this fashion world in which all is more or less legit, I said, why not? Oversize sweaters for petite must be a thing somewhere. And they are, you just need to know how to handle them. So here are a few golden rules because we don’t believe in the tall-only system:
- Love thine belts. Really. They are here to help you cut the fabric mass in two, and remind the world and yourself that you, too, have indeed a waistline.
- OR embrace the bagginess. Bagginess is fun, bagginess is comfortable. Bagginess is a little like still wearing a pajamas. And that is one amazing feeling there.
- Play with contrasts. There are good chances that, with an oversize sweater and boyfriend jeans, you will look like you just came out of your father’s wardrobe. Go for leggings (or tights) instead.
- Embrace your skirts. Especially the short ones.
