You say Fashion Weeks are over. New York, Paris, London – they’ve had their showtime. Tokyo though, a city that has only become a fashion metropolis in the last couple of years, stands out in more thank one aspect. First of all, their week is happening now – from the 12th to the 18th of October, Mercedes-Benz Tokyo Fashion Week is going on with 50 brands presenting their SS16 collections. And second, because Japanese street style is like not other in the world.
Undeniable, every city has its own specialities. But an uninformed can easily mix up French, American and British street-looks. In contrast, everyone who has a little sense for peculiarities will be able to recognize a Japanese trendsetter.
Tokyo street style is notable for its futuristic, mangaesque, doll-inspired elements. You see Kanji-inspired patterns and way oversized pieces. Their limit of eccentricity generally lies above the western one I feel. Through fashion, the nation has found a great way cross tradition and future – some other countries better start doing that as well!
