Rick Owens Made His Models Wear Models (Really)

Something happened, and suddenly Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 2 at NYFW doesn’t look so funny anymore. Having a hard time imagining a collection less ‘what-the-hell-man’ than Kanye’s worn out jumpers? Try with models wearing other models.

It happened at Paris Fashion Week, and this is not a metaphor of something deep. Models walked down the runway on top of other models in the name of fashion and in the name of Rick Owens SS16 collection. Some models were reportedly just wearing the clothes.

Obviously, the whole collection passed by unnoticed. Brave and clever Vogue reviewer Maya Singer explained Rick Owen’s weird move with a concept that we meet pretty frequently nowadays: strong women and whether these two words together form a compliment. Some people, like actress Carey Mulligan, say no — according to the actress, strength is an attribute that shouldn’t be taken as rare in women.

However, Maya Singer takes it from the other side: Rick Owens didn’t want to give us strong women, but women with literal, physical strength. And it might take someĀ  to carry your own weight strapped on your back (or front) down the runway while the front row is like “Whaaaat”.

I don’t know if this is ‘fun’ or rather ‘edgy’ in your book, but I feel a lot like one of those models strapped on some other model upside down: confused and likely soon to be having enough of this random stuff.
