Hats Off! The Art Of Choosing Your Crown

Hats are big this season — more honestly, this whole year — and eyeing that girl on the underground who is able to pull off a fabulous wide-brimmed fedora wishing you were as brave is not enough anymore. It’s time to take the next step: wear some badass hat yourself.

Sure, easy to say that. But which one? A bit like sunglasses, hats have a little pinch of fashion science behind. If the same girl on the underground looks just awesome in a fedora, it doesn’t mean she will look as fab in a beanie. That’s no luck for snowy days. Every face shape, every pair of cheekbones, every height of forehead has a different hat-soulmate.

Fedora

So you think you can pull off a fedora. Well, this is probably true, because to say ‘fedora’ within the hat universe is a bit like saying ‘bird’ in the animal world. Technically, a fedora is a relatively wide-brimmed felt hat which comes in different shapes and with different crowns. And that is your pick: do you want the brim to fall graciously, or you’d rather have it straight and solid? Are you going total simple, or would you like a ribbon with that?

Cossack

From Russia with love, this hat is — obviously — for winter only, unless you really don’t mind some gallons of sweat down your cheeks. Perfect for a round face shape, its length makes your face slimmer and highlights your features. Also, it’s super warm! If you are a lipstick lover, a touch of red will make it all more ancient East.

Boater

Girl gotta love a boater! Small, simple, smart, it looks a lot like the non-serious version of the fedora. If you consider yourself more playful than high-fashion, this is your head pal of choice. The straw version with a striped ribbon is perfect for retro trips on actual boats.

Bucket

Hate it or love it, the bucket hat is still here. A must in the early nineties from rappers to fashion icons, this topper has been picked as the weird of the bunch among all other hats to crown the heads of Rihanna, Pharrell and Kenzo models. Warning: not for everybody! Unless you love fishing in style.
