When lost in an ocean of long-legged trousers and maxi skirts, shopping for short girls can be frustrating. And yes, it is great that so many retailers decided to create specific lines for both shorter and taller women, but this is often not enough.
A fit and flare dress from the petite section can reach your ankles, or petite jeans can just fit on one leg, since petite departments follow one standard size. For how weird it may sound to some, we small girls come in all different sizes, just like the tall ones.
Here are our personalized style tips for petite girls of every shape and size, so that you can skip that fitting room frustration altogether.
Higher the waist, longer the legs
High-waisted jeans or skirts are an easy way to make you legs look that pretty bit longer and balance your figure embracing your waistline. However, if your breast is not as petite as you are, mid-waist could be a better solution.
Keep it above the knee
Any petite woman will look better with a skirt or dress that ends above the knee. However, don’t see it as a rule, because maxi skirts are awesome. You just need to be a little more careful…
Long but simple
If you just won’t let that maxi skirt go (that’s the spirit!), then remember these three rules:
- keep it simple: no extra fabric nor heavy prints. Black keeps the figure slightly longer and more slender, but why not trying that color-block?
- prefer a skirt fitted at the waist
- stop above the feet: don’t go down to the ground.
Compulsory fitting room
Try on everything you want to buy. Nothing makes you look smaller than a piece of clothing that looks even slightly too big for you, and with most retailers’ standards this is most likely to happen. In particular, make sure that the top of your sleeves sits right on your shoulder, without coming down the arm.
Keep your head high (and your hair higher!)
If your aim here is to look a little taller, then embrace the high ballerina bun. It creates a vertical line with your body that surely is flattering. Also, heavy, long hair can bring you down a little; if you are daring, try a shorter haircut.
The Golden Rule
Knowing how to enhance your body type is important no matter your size and height. In every single case, the only rule is: it looks nice if it’s proportioned.
