Turkey is going through a bit of a cultural revolution at the moment. Artists are flocking to Istanbul for their cool, and rapidly growing art scene. It has the same mood Berlin had not too long ago, with political undertones and an edge to the work coming out of there… that is not to say it is without hits sophistication and glamor as well. It’s the place to watch for up and coming contemporary artists.
Lara has a special eye for the found and forgotten, creating contemporary collages with a vintage feel. He pieces speak an international language and can be understood regardless of culture. She takes modern elements with a retro twist – not to mention her fascination with cats.
MOVING MUSEUM – Istanbul
46 artist in 3 months will be exhibiting their work in the nearly 7,500 sq m show space. Curated by Simon Sakhai and Aya Mousawi, they have brought in incredible artists like Peles Empire, Hannah Perry, Anne de Vries, Jon Rafman and N Dash
ALI EMIR TAPAN
Receiving his education at St. Martins in London Ali Emir Tapan is best known for his sculptural and photographic work. In Istanbul there are competitions called CI 90, which he takes part in. Artists are given 90 minutes to create an exhibition in a shipping container.
Ahmet is an established artist on the scene, he calls Istanbul, Amsterdam, Berlin and Helsinki home. He sometimes approaches his work with political messages, he makes short films, graphic designs, drawings, and animations. It is difficult to categorize his work into one cookie cutter description.
