If you think about it, what was the first fashion advice you’ve ever gotten? If you are anything like me it might have been something like “dress for success”, a catchy little slogan that you probably didn’t think much of at the time. The exhibit ‘Women Fashion Power’ at the Design Museum in London definitely has though and takes a look at the link between powerful women and the attire they’ve chosen to represent them.
Throughout history women’s fashion has been a sign of the times with constantly evolving silhouettes and cuts – from corsets to trousers. It is loaded with cultural, social and artistic meaning, so the garments a woman chooses has a specific significance in shaping her identity… much more so than in men’s fashion.
The exhibit demonstrates ‘how intelligent women take what they need from fashion’ rather defining a specific movement. It shows the perfect balance between Power and Fashion, Fashion and Women, and closes the circle with ‘Women and Power’ and the significance of their overlapping connection.
