Anh Duong’s entire life is a work of art. She has danced with the Franchetti Academy of Classical Dance, modeled for Vogue, Christian Lacroix, and John Galliano among others, starred in films shown at Cannes, Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, and now devotes her life to painting and sculpting. Wow, what a CV… Most people would be completely content with their life’s work if they were able to accomplish just one of these feats, but this aspiration wonder woman definitely dreams big!
She was born in Bordeaux, France to a Spanish mother and Vietnamese father and studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and began to paint once she moved to New York.
Her unique path in life definitely has an impact on her art. She draws inspiration from the fashion industry and plays a lot with the idea of beauty. Her self portraits are unglamorous and intimate representations of herself; something that is unexpected of someone who has made a living being “beautiful” and is incredibly inspiring to see.
And we are not alone in our love for her, Artnet magazine said about her:
“Duong’s paintings should be viewed as contributions to a different genre – they belong alongside the work of women such as Dora Maar, Anaïs Nin, and Frida Kahlo, artists who compellingly exposed interior worlds whose beauty, intelligence, and character inspired creativity, both in themselves and in others”
