Did you know that most models start their careers at 13? Not only that but they are sent to work halfway across the world alone, and are placed in a world rampant with drugs and alcohol. Is this a place for our “girls”? Check out this survey conducted by The Model Alliance.
Luckily, a spotlight has been put on underage modeling in the last year. Just last week the Girl Model trailer was presented at the SxSW festival. It follows the lives of underaged models and shows the stresses they endure.
The CFDA finally woke up and made some large strides in model protection this year…..putting restrictions on weight, age and health risks to models. Bravo to the CFDA, it’s certainly taken them long enough!
An enormous effort is also being made to forbid all underage model contracts, an issue that has been immensely controversial over the past few years. Design houses are now banned from hiring models under the age of 16 to walk in their runway shows and must survey all models’ IDs to ensure that the rule is followed through. (Masslive.com)
